Enhance Your Pond’s Natural Look

Some people have water features that look like a dream – mini waterfalls, or cascading stepped falls, with textured rough-hewn rocks adding to the natural, yet aesthetically put together look. It all looks so simple and beautiful, but behind that effortless grace is a lot of hard work. You need to have a design in mind that is able to be reproduced, be able to source for the materials needed, and eventually put it all together in an aesthetically pleasing way. Here are several of the considerations to bear in mind when you’re trying to put together your pond’s natural look.

An Eye-Catching Water Feature

For maximum pizzazz, you want to have some moving water feature to catch the eye. In pond design and aesthetics, you can never go wrong with a waterfall. When planning your waterfall, do note that there are two components: one is the cascading structure for the waterfall itself, and the other is the pool that the water falls into. In order to create a waterfall, you would need to install the right product to make it happen. You can browse through Everything Koi’s selection of cascading falls and spillways for a variety of creative pond building options.

Go For Natural Curves

For the pool itself, the shape is important. In nature, ponds are usually in an uneven, ‘imperfect’ shape, that is not a perfect circle or square or rectangle. Find a pond shape that complements your outdoor landscape, to enhance the overall beauty of the area. The pond may be slightly curving, like an oxbow lake, or just be in an uneven shape in your garden.

Choose Your Rocks

The look and type of rocks you use for the pond can make or break a pond. Though it seems counter-intuitive, going for a natural look means putting in more care into selecting the various types of rocks used. If you simply use one type of rock, there is the danger of creating a ‘necklace’ look where the pond is surrounded by one type of rock. It looks very obvious when there is only one type of rock, so work with a professional to mix different rock types together to create something that looks like it was done by Mother Nature. Another thing you could do is to consider using rocks that are native to your area, for an even more authentic appeal.

Get Leafy

Choose a good selection of plants to accompany or surround your pond. Add some native plants around your pond for greater authenticity and a very natural look – your guests may not even realize they were planted! However, you can also take a bold hand and pick some brightly colored plants as accents around your pond. Throw in a log or stump here and there, and you’re golden.
